A ship in harbour is safe.
But that is not what ships are built for.

Our main navigation area is the mediterranean sea. There, corals are adopting a survival strategy to resist climate change as found out by our friend Dr. Diego Kersting. However, on the other hand, the impact of human activities is proportionally stronger than in any other sea [1].  One of the consequences is that the concentration of microplastics  in the mediterranean sea is amongst the highest in the world [2].

"Youth can lead a social change for the preservation of the marine environment"

ASE launched in 2018 a pilot project The Pedagogical Sailboat Project
part of a broader and longer term initiative for youth called Erasmus Maris

The Pedagogical Sailboat  project
Co-financed by the EU in the frame of the Erasmus+ programme
October 2018- June 2020

The Pedagogical Sailboat Project
includes partners from education, scientific research and sailing around a common topic, pollution of the marine environment by microplastics.

Scientific research for better understanding of the problematic
The development of scientific skills is a fundamental axis of the Pedagogical Sailboat.
We are very proud to count on the scientific support of :
  • Dr. Andrej Kržan from the National Institute of Chemistry and who was coordinator of  DeFishGear project on marine litter in the Adriatic Sea.
  • Professor Philippe Dubois, rector of the University of Mons, who facilitated a collaboration with the researchers of the  Laboratory of Polymeric and Composite Materials (LPCM).

Awareness through education for a substantial  habit change
The pedagogical sailboat allows acquiring skills targeted by the secondary school curriculum in concrete situations and contexts and in a collaborative way. Four secondary schools  joined the project.

The problem of plastic pollution has a profound social origin [3].

The Pedagogical Sailboat project is the
first step towards the development of the  "Erasmus Maris" initiative which objective is to foster the participation of secondary school students (16+) in scientific projects related to the protection of the marine environment in the frame of a mobility experience aboard a sailboat.
